Make&Create is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children attending our art classes. We recognise our duty to protect children from harm and to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. This policy outlines how we ensure the safety and wellbeing of children under our care.
2. Policy Statement
- The welfare of the child is paramount.
- All children, regardless of age, gender, disability, race, religion, or background, have the right to protection from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
- We are committed to taking all reasonable steps to protect children from harm while participating in our classes.
- We will ensure that all staff, volunteers, and associates understand and adhere to this policy.
3. Legal Framework
This policy is in line with UK laws and guidance, including:
- The Children Act 1989 & 2004
- The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006
- The Working Together to Safeguard Children (Statutory Guidance)
- The Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance
- The Data Protection Act 2018 & UK GDPR
4. Recognising and Responding to Abuse
Abuse can take many forms, including:
- Physical abuse - Deliberate injury or harm to a child.
- Emotional abuse - Persistent emotional maltreatment affecting a child's wellbeing.
- Sexual abuse - Forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities.
- Neglect - Persistent failure to meet a child's basic physical or emotional needs.
Signs of abuse may include:
- Unexplained injuries or changes in behaviour.
- Fearfulness, withdrawal, or sudden outbursts.
- Reluctance to return home or to be with certain individuals.
5. Safeguarding Measures
To protect children in our care, we will:
a) Staff and Volunteer Recruitment
- Conduct enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks on all staff and volunteers working with children.
- Ensure staff and volunteers provide references before working with children.
- Provide safeguarding training to all team members.
b) Code of Conduct
All staff and volunteers must:
- Treat all children with respect and dignity.
- Never use inappropriate language or behaviour.
- Avoid one-to-one situations in private spaces with a child unless necessary and approved.
- Not engage in physical punishment, inappropriate physical contact, or favouritism.
- Report any concerns about a child's safety immediately.
c) Supervision and Safety
- Ensure an appropriate adult-to-child ratio in classes.
- Maintain a safe, secure environment free from hazards.
- Ensure all emergency procedures are in place (e.g., fire safety, first aid).
6. Reporting and Responding to Concerns
If a child discloses abuse or a staff member has concerns:
- Listen carefully – Stay calm, take them seriously, and do not ask leading questions.
- Reassure the child – Let them know they did the right thing by speaking up.
- Do not promise confidentiality – Explain that you must share this with the appropriate person.
- Record the concern – Write down what was said, including times, dates, and observations.
- Report immediately – Contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for action.

If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 or contact your local child protection services.
7. Online Safety
If online communication is used for classes or updates:
- Ensure parental consent before engaging with children online.
- Only use official business accounts (no personal messaging).
- Monitor online interactions to prevent inappropriate contact.
8. Confidentiality and Data Protection
- All child protection concerns are confidential and shared only with relevant authorities.
- Personal information is stored securely, in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
9. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary to reflect legal requirements and best practices.
